EduWiki Conference 2013/Proposals

Wikimedia UK is organising EduWiki Conference 2013 as the second annual Education conference from WMUK on Friday 1-2 November 2013.

Suggestion for sessions, were open through the template below specifying the title of talk/workshop or session, proposer's name, how long it will be and a short blurb as to what it is about.

As we also aim to attract academics and other education professionals to this conference, there's also a formal call for proposals. This is open until Friday 30 August 2013.

Initial ideas and proposals for EduWiki 2013

Keynote speakers

Suggestions:

• David O. White (see education post on blog).
• A local Headteacher (maybe someone who took part in Cardiff TeachMeet in 2011?)
• Dr Ioan Matthews - Chief Executive of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (http://www.colegcymraeg.ac.uk/en/thecoleg/core-staff/)

Ideas for possible activities (still to be proposed as sessions)

In no particular order:

Must-have activities

• An introductory overview for newcomers (coordinator: Martin Poulter)
• "Addressing the Wikipedia Problem in H.E." (with Universities UK + TurnItIn - coordinators: Martin Poulter/Toni Sant)

• Individual presentations from UK people using WM projects in their classrooms (coordinator: Toni Sant)

• Workshop/roundtable on/for Student societies (coordinator: Katie Chan?)
• VLE demonstration (with Charles Matthews?)
• Education Committee - open meeting (coordinator: tbc)
• Wikimedia Education Programme globally - key lessons (WMF speaker?)

Other ideas for activities

• Train the trainer session, especially for teachers; bilingual (coordinators: Doug Taylor and Robin Owain?) Maybe develop as a CPD resource long term?
• A secondary/high school event building up towards Wikimania 2014 (coordinator: Ed Saperia?)
• Open Education panel (with JISC?)
• Demonstration of Courses plugin (confirm with Sage Ross?)
• Tie-in with Academic Dress editathon (coordinator: Harry Mitchell?)
• Editathon/Unconference (Saturday afternoon? -- possibly at the Dr Who Museum and/or other local GLAM - careful not to make it too commercial - i.e. to draw in GLAM community - coordinator: Johnbod/Fae?)
• Offer a free USB flash drive containing Wikipedia for Schools 2013 to all attendees (recommended by Jon Davis)
